Cyber-bullying moves into the real world for Kiwi beauty bloggers

Internet trolls have turned into a real-life nightmare for two Kiwi beauty bloggers.

Sally Jo Hickey, daughter of former TVNZ weatherman Jim Hickey, has hundreds of thousands of people following her make up tutorials on YouTube.

But some of her fans have become frightening aggressive, with Sally Jo this week revealing she was assaulted at a bar in Napier.

Sally Jo and her boyfriend Tama were at the Thirsty Whale in Napier and she was posing for a photograph with a fan when someone began calling her name, before throwing a glass at her head.

It shattered, with glass ending up in her hair and shoes.

“I was very scared, ’cause I’m not a violent person and it really rattled me.”

But it’s not the first time the YouTube star has dealt with unwanted attention in real life.

Hickey and fellow beauty blogger Shannon Harris, who posts under the name Shaaanxo, have both declared they’re unlikely to go out clubbing anymore, due to the reaction their presence provokes.

“So many people grab my boobs and it sounds really stupid, but it makes me feel really, really uncomfortable,” said Harris.

“It’s like I’m treated like a piece of meat and everyone wants to just grab me and pull my hair and grab my arm, like, jump on top of me.

“It’s happened a few times now.”
