Cyber bullying expert will help to Kensington family. The mother of a Kensington student whose social media post about bullying went viral says her son is going back to school after getting some high-profile help.
Melanie McNally posted on her Facebook page Monday night that she had met with representatives of the P.E.I. education system and had worked out a plan to ease her son back to school.
McNally thanked everyone who’d spread her story online but made special mention of Parry Aftab, who, having seen her social media post, she said, flew to P.E.I. from New York to advocate for her at the meeting.
Aftab is a well-known American expert in cyber law and an advocate for online safety and the prevention of cyber bullying, especially as it relates to children.
She hosted the 2013 International Stop Cyberbullying Youth Summit in Charlottetown.
The Journal Pioneer asked McNally on Tuesday for further comment on the developments regarding her son’s situation but received a response from Aftab declining to comment at this time. She indicated that they may be willing to make a statement sometime in the future.
“We’re really focused on making sure that Collin gets back to school, that’s he’s healthy and well and educated,” said Aftab.
McNally’s original Facebook post that went viral was made on Nov. 16. In the message she said she was pulling her son Collin out of the Prince Edward Island school system due to what she alleged was ongoing bullying at KISH.
