Warren High boys arrested in sexting, cyberbullying case

Three Warren High School boys were arrested last week in a case that Gurnee police said involved sexting and cyberbullying of a female classmate.

The investigation is ongoing, and others also suspected of involvement were expected to be arrested, said Gurnee police Cmdr. Willie Meyer.

“The plan is obviously to wrap this thing up as quickly as possible,” Meyer said.

According to a release from the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office, no charges have been filed in the matter. All juvenile cases, the release said, must first be sent to the Lake County Juvenile Probation Department for examination.

“The office will review the information in light of the guidance provided by the Juvenile Court Act to determine the appropriate course of action,” the release said.

The girl and the three boys involved in the case are freshmen at Warren Township High School, Meyer said. Authorities did not name them because they are juveniles.

The boys were released under their parents’ supervision.

The case has been under investigation since Oct. 24, Meyer said. The alleged victim reported the incidents to Gurnee police, he said.

Meyer declined to elaborate on the specifics of the case, except to say the alleged sexting and cyberbullying was carried out via the students’ phones.

An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated, based on information provided by Gurnee police, that the three boys were charged with felony distribution of child pornography. The state’s attorney’s office said no charges have been approved in the case.
